“Light My Fire” Saturday Sangha Class
In Pantanjali’s sacred text, “The Yoga Sutras,” he outlines an 8-fold path, known as the Eight Limbs of Yoga, which includes the third (asana/poses) and fourth (pranayama/breath work) limbs that are most familiar to yoga students. Together, the Eight Limbs provide a rich framework for our yoga practice on the mat, and for restoring us to unity of body, mind and spirit in our lives.
This month, Saturday Sangha classes are focused on the second limb of the 8-fold path: the Niyamas, which are internal codes of conduct, sometimes referred to as personal observances. The Niyamas are essentially moral guidelines outlining how to conduct ourselves in healthy ways. The third Niyama is “Tapas,” which refers to a sense of passion, or fiery discipline. “Tapas” means “to heat,” and it is a practice of directing energy and focus to our efforts so that we might burn away impurities that block us physically, emotionally or mentally. Tapas, in partnership with Svadhyaya (self study) and Ishvara Pranidhana (surrender to the divine), is a fire that sparks curiosity about our habits and quirks so that we can more deeply and authentically root ourselves in our true nature.
In this all levels class, we will move mindfully through a sequence of asanas (poses) to build heat in the body, and to find for ourselves where we can practice the discipline of Tapas- through movement or stillness- as we cultivate sthira and sukha (a balance of steadiness and ease) in our practice and in our lives. Class will conclude with a luxurious savasana (resting pose) to cultivate self care.
Individual classes are $15 and payment can be sent via Venmo to SandyPauseYoga. See the “Pricing and Packages” page for additional information. All classes are listed in central (DST) time.
