“Pure and Simple” Saturday Sangha Class
In Pantanjali’s sacred text, “The Yoga Sutras,” he outlines an 8-fold path, known as the Eight Limbs of Yoga, which includes the third (asana/poses) and fourth (pranayama/breath work) limbs that are most familiar to yoga students. Together, the Eight Limbs provide a rich framework for our yoga practice on the mat, and for restoring us to unity of body, mind and spirit in our lives.
This month, Saturday Sangha classes are focused on the second limb of the 8-fold path: the Niyamas, which are internal codes of conduct, sometimes referred to as personal observances. The Niyamas are essentially moral guidelines outlining how to conduct ourselves in healthy ways. The first Niyama is “Saucha,” which means purity and cleanliness. This Niyama teaches the importance of cleanliness in body, mind and spirit. The practice of saucha is an exfoliation of physical and mental impurities (including negative habits, mindsets and patterns) to support our efforts to cultivate health and happiness for ourselves, and by extension, our communities.
In this all levels class, we will move mindfully through a sequence of asanas (poses) inspired by B.K.S. Iyengar’s guidance that “when the body is cleansed, the mind purified, and senses controlled, joyful awareness needed to realize the inner self also comes.” Class will conclude with meditation and a luxurious savasana (resting pose).
Individual classes are $15 and payment can be sent via Venmo to SandyPauseYoga. See the “Pricing and Packages” page for additional information. All classes are listed in central (CST) time.
